Fabric/rope Bag

The instructions for this technique were in a recent Homespun Magazine.  They had a larger bag using 40 metres of 'rope'.  I purchased 20m and used 13 for this bag.  To be honest, I found wrapping the rope tedious with the result a smaller bag - will be used for bits and bobs.  I probably will try it again, perhaps making a bowl, a placement, maybe a coaster!!!

BAG

One of the CQs, Gail W. shared this bag with us and I couldn't resist having a go.  It is made using a hessian shopping bag from the local supermarket ($2).  I only added the flowers, leaves and buttons - easy.

CQs Christmas

CQs have finished this year with breakups for the Night Owls on Tuesday night and the Friday Group last week.  We did mug rugs for our Christmas swap.  On Friday we had a competition for the best decorated table (my table won for the second year in a row!) - all at my table dressed up as elves and yours truly as Santa (or should I say Mrs Claus) and the table was decorated with toys, toys and more toys.  It was great fun and we sang our version of a White Christmas (Quiet Christmas).  We also had a competition for a decoration made out of recycles items.  I had made a decoration from pieces of an old quilting magazine with the folded pieces mounted on an old CD.  Elileen who won the comp had made the same decoration using pages from a telephone book - it was huge - as they say, size does matter!!!

Table Runner

I purchased this Judy Niemeyer pattern at the Show and Tell morning at Peachester.  It is a foundation paper pieced table runner and I am pleased to have finished it.  I quilted it - free motion - I think I am improving with this; however I know it would not win any prizes - I can live with that!  It is 17" x 51" and the colours are sharper than the pic shows.
I have also put a pic of another mug rug.  CQs swap at Christmas breakup is a mug rug - any design, not necessarily Christmas theme.  I am making a few more as samples for them.

Finished - PHD

A couple of weeks ago at our Night Owls Group, I mentioned I had never finished my first piece of patchwork, explaining that the binding was not long enough and I discarded it into a box.  One of the group suggest I get it out, unpick the binding and redo it.  Well, I did.  My placement started in about 1981, is now finished, complete with its very own 'age spot'!  I showed it at S&T last night and all were impressed, particularly with the small hand quilting stitches.

Free Motion Quilting

In my quest to improve my FM quilting, I purchased Helen Godden's DVD and worked through her exercises.  I completed the dragonfly project.  Still a long way to go!!!!

Our Birthday Chair

One of the members of CQs brought in a chair she had covered for Show and Tell.  As we often needed an extra chair, I thought this would be a good idea.  So of to the local op shop we went and found a suitable chair for $8!  I decided to try out my 'chair covering' skills making a birthday chair - we usually decorated a chair with streamers and balloons.  Miss Nine (last Wednesday) was delighted with it.  Miss Five was a little put out that the chair had not been for her birthday in May.  However, she had a turn on the chair and all was well.  I plan to make an 'everyday' type of cover in the near future.

Sue's Journey Around the World

This is one of the quilts I entered in the Caloundra Quilters Quilt Show.  It was admired by many and I spent time explaining to many how I made it.
I had made a bag for our 'bag raffle' (a pic had previously been posted on this blog) and was surprised when my sister who had come on a bus trip to visit our show won the bag!  I was told it was a very popular bag with many wanting to win it.   I know it will have a good home and will be greatly appreciated.

Beside the Sea

These are two mug rugs and a bag I have made very quickly for our display case.  The theme of the quilt show is Beside the Sea and we are carrying this theme in the display case.

Quilt Show

I went to a quilt show at Glasshouse Mountains today - there were some very lovely quilts.  The quilting on one was a real standout - professionally done by machine.  One of our CQ girls was on white glove duty - nice to have a chat.  No photography was allow, hence no pics to post.

QUILT SHOW BAG RAFFLE

Here is a pic of the bag I have made for the bag raffle at CQs quilt show at the end of July.  I have only a sleeve to add to a quilt and the challenge to go!

FINISHED - MY LITTLE GIRLS

I have finally finished a quilt for the CQ Quilt Show at the end of July. I will post a pic after the Quilt Show.  It has 49 blocks of Sunbonnet Sue all around the world.  It is hand appliqued, free motion quilted and assembled using quilt as you go technique.  I am pleased with it.

UFO Weekend

Last weekend, CQs had a 'UFO Weekend' where we could bring projects we would like to finish.  I competed this quilt.  I had done the quilt top some time ago.  It is a disappearing nine patch with leopards, paw prints and a vibrant green fabric.   I quilted it and added the binding.  I did do other bits and pieces as well as enjoying some delightful company and cooking goodies brought in by others.  Although quite tiring, it was great to spend time with fellow quilters and come away with a finished quilt.

BROOCHES

I made these three brooches from wool.  I had seen them on UTube and they were very quick and easy to make  - would look good on a jacket or shirt.

Scrap Quilt Finished

I started this back in January to diminish my stash.  I finally finished it and quite like it despite not achieving  goal to use up my stash.  My husband is claiming it to keep his legs warm while watching the footie!

FAIRY QUILT

One of our night group ladies stitched these lovely fairies and wanted them put into a quilt that she will give to CQs to sell.  I framed them with 2 inch squares and quilted in the ditch and around each fairy.  In the border I did feathers with free motion - I am getting better at it.  Although it is not my usual style with its soft pastel colours, I think it is very cute.

MUG RUG / WISHING OWL

Deb from Night Owls brought this pattern along for wishing owls.  It is a very naive style and I tried to make one as naive as my 'accountant's mind' will allow!
I have made a mug rug for one of our quilters who is having her 80th birthday.  I used the circular sewing attachment for my Bernina for only the second time.  When I first bought it, I thought what a grand idea and could see lots of uses for it - that was 12+ months ago!

Free Motion Quilting

At our Tuesday night group (Night Owls), we had a class of Free Motion Quilting and this is the 'sampler' I completed.  It was quite a challenge and I still have a long way to go.  However I will keep practising!

MUG RUGS AND FREE MOTION

I have made these mug rugs today.  I have been practising free motion quilting and have done some meandering on these rugs.

The cushion was all done free motion - I found the design for the large flower in a quilting magazine.  It was supposed to have a tear drop filler in the background.  However, I decided on a swirl design would be more manageable for me.
I have added a pic of the flowers on a tree in our garden.  They are particularly beautiful this year - something to do with getting rain at the right time!

Mrs Lincoln's Dressmaker

I have received this book last Friday and it is taking me all my discipline not to keep reading and reading.  It has been raining on the Sunshine Coast since late Sunday, ideal reading weather.  However, I do have lots to do as I have been elected as President of Caloundra Quilters and have a couple of quilting projects I need to finish for our Quilt Show in July.

Free Motion

I have bitten the bullet and am quilting my 49 blocks of International Sunbonnet Sue.  I have been told to practise, practise and keep practising free motion and will get better.  However I have done this and have decided to just do it - although not all stitches are perfect, it is my quilt and I can live with a little imperfection as I will not be entering the quilt (when finished) at any judged show.  I am sure by the time the 49 blocks are finished I will have improved!!!!

Elm Creek Novels

This is a pic of the quilt I made to celebrate the National Year of Reading (2012).  The centre has the Elm Creek Manor with features mentioned in the novels, eg the grey stone building, full length front patio, apple orchard, tall trees and circular drive,  The flying geese circle is from a novel where Sylvia walks outside and sees the geese flying overhead.  I then completed it with chain stitch embroidery using a pattern in an Australian quilting magazine and a final border foundation pieced including printed images of covers of the novels.

This quilt was displayed in our local library (Caloundra, Sunshine Coast).

Mug Rug pics

These are the mug rugs I have made so far.  They are fun to make.  The size varies - your call.   A great project if you don't want to make a large quilt, or if you have no walls to spare to hang another wall hanging!

MUG RUGS

I have registered with Quilting Gallery for the mug rug swap.  I think mug rugs are great and especially when you don't want to make a large quilt.  I took the ones I have made (five so far) to Night Owls last night (the Caloundra Quilters night group) and these were met with much interest and many queries as to what a mug rug is!  I will post photos of the mug rugs in the next day or so.

Mrs Lincoln's Dressmaker

I am patiently awaiting for my copy of Jennifer Chiaverini's latest novel to arrive - I have had it on preorder since September 2012.  I am a great fan of the Elm Creek Novels and am looking forward to reading this one that is something different.

Scrap Quilts

I have been trying to decrease my stash by making a couple of scrap quilts.  Despite cutting numerous strips, 1" to 2.5" wide, I have not made any inroads into my stash at all.
